types of CDL practice tests

The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) practice test is not a requirement to obtain your CDL. However, taking the practice test may give you a better understanding of the material covered on the actual exam.

There is no limit to how many times you can take the CDL practice test. However, we recommend you take it at least once before taking the actual exam. This will help you gauge your understanding of the material and give you an idea of what to expect on the actual exam.

Taking the practice test multiple times may also help you improve your score on the actual exam. Each time you take the practice test, pay attention to the areas where you need improvement. Then, focus on those areas when studying for the actual exam.

CDL Exam Purpose and Background

With a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you are qualified to operate larger vehicles that require more skills and knowledge than the average driver. For example, with a CDL, you can drive any vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more. In addition, the CDL demonstrates that you have the minimum required safety knowledge to operate these kinds of vehicles.

Types of CDL Practise Tests

There are various types of CDL practice tests like the General Knowledge test, the Air Brakes test, the Combination Vehicles test, and so on. Depending on which kind of vehicle you will be driving, you will need to take a different CDL practice test.

CDL General Knowledge Practice Test

The General Knowledge test is required for all applicants. This covers basic trucking knowledge and is used to determine if you are qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle. In addition, it will help you determine if you are prepared for the general knowledge exam and which parts of the CDL manual you need to review.

Hazardous Materials Practice Test

The Hazardous Materials test is required if you want to transport hazardous materials. For example, you may need to take this test if you’re transporting gasoline, explosives, or other dangerous materials. This test covers the regulations for safely transporting hazardous materials.

Air Brakes Practice Test

The Air Brakes test is required to operate a vehicle with air brakes. This will help you determine if you are prepared for the air brakes exam and which parts of the CDL manual you need to review. The exam requires knowledge of both single and dual-air brake systems, as well as how to inspect and use them. This test is open to anyone with a Class A, B, or C license.

Combination Vehicles Practice Test

The Combination Vehicles Practice Test is a must to operate vehicles such as tractor-trailers or straight trucks with trailers. This will help you determine if you are prepared for the combination vehicle exam and which parts of the CDL manual you need to review. The exam covers basic knowledge of combination vehicles, such as how to couple and uncouple them. It also covers more specific topics like air brakes and shifting gears. This test is open to anyone with a Class A license.

Passenger Vehicles Practice Test

The Passenger Vehicles test is necessary if you plan to transport passengers. If you plan on driving a vehicle that seats 16 people or more, you must take a passenger endorsement test. Doing this will let you know if you are ready to take the passenger vehicles exam and which areas of the CDL manual require more study.

The exam covers basic knowledge of passenger vehicles, such as loading and unloading passengers safely, best practices while driving on the road, driving in emergencies, and more. It also covers more specific topics like emergency exits and evasive maneuvers. This test is open to anyone with a Class B or C license.

School Bus Practice Test

If you wish to drive a school bus and transport children, you must take and pass the School Bus test. If you plan on driving a school bus, you must take a school bus endorsement test in addition to the passenger vehicles exam. This will determine whether you are sufficiently prepared to take the school bus examination and what sections of the CDL manual need more attention.

The school bus exam is similar to the passenger vehicles exam but with a few additional questions specific to transporting school children. You’ll need to be knowledgeable about various topics, including danger zones and emergency procedures, and get your school bus endorsement.

Furthermore, you should understand how to load and unload students safely, as well as any local regulations regarding school buses. This test is open to anyone with a Class B or C license.

Double/Triple Trailers Practice Test

Before you can operate a vehicle with two or more trailers, you’ll have to take and pass the Double/Triple Trailers practice test. The exam covers topics such as coupling and uncoupling trailers, air brakes, and shifting gears. This will help you determine if you are prepared for the double/triple trailers exam and which parts of the CDL manual you need to review. This test is only open to those with a Class A license.

Tanker Vehicles Practice Test

The Tanker Vehicles practice test is required to operate a vehicle with a tank hauling liquids or compressed gases. The exam covers topics such as how to properly attach and detach the tank, load and unload a tank, inspect a tank, and operate the valves and pumps.

Suppose you are hauling a tank with an individual rating of 119 gallons or more or transporting multiple tanks with a combined capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. In that case, you will need to obtain a tanker endorsement. This test is open to anyone with a Class A license.

Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Test

This pre-trip inspection practice test will familiarize you with the types of questions asked on the vehicle inspection exam. For example, you will be expected to know where items are located in your vehicle and what purpose they serve. In addition, you will need to be able to identify different types of defects and explain how they should be fixed. This practice test is open to anyone with a Class A, B, or C license.

There are a variety of different practice tests available to help you prepare for your CDL exam. The number of times you take the practice test will depend on your comfort level with the material.

If you feel confident after taking the test once, you may not need to retake it. However, if you are struggling with the material or don’t feel confident in your knowledge, you may want to take the practice test multiple times. Generally, taking the practice test at least once and preferably multiple times before taking the actual CDL exam is a good idea.
